Box Office Report: Saw VI Can’t Top Paranormal Activity

Paranormal Activity continued to expand and shot up to #1 at the box office this weekend, earning $22 million to raise its total gross to $62.4 million in five weeks. The film had a tiny budget of just $15,000, making it a huge success financially. The film also once again had the highest per theater average of any in the top ten with $11,311 per theater.

Saw VI debuted at #2 with $14.8 million. The film had a relatively low budget of $11 million. This is easily the worst opening weekend for a Saw film (the best being $33.6 million for Saw III and the previous worst being $18.2 million for the original Saw).

Where the Wild Things Are fell two spots to #3 in its second weekend, earning $14.4 million to raise its total gross to $53.9 million. The film had a budget of $100 million.

Law Abiding Citizen slipped two spots to #4 in its second weekend, earning $12.7 million to raise its total gross to $40.3 million. The film had a budget of $50 million.

Couples Retreat fell one spot to #5 in its third weekend, earning $11 million to raise its total gross to $78.2 million. The film had a budget of $70 million.

Astro Boy debuted at #6 with $7 million. The film had a budget of $65 million.

The Stepfather fell two spots to #7 in its second weekend, earning $6.5 million to raise its total gross to $20.3 million. The film had a budget of $20 million.

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant debuted at #8 with $6.3 million. The film had a budget of $40 million.

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs fell three spots to #9 in its sixth weekend, earning $5.6 million to raise its total gross to $115.2 million. The film had a budget of $100 million.

And Zombieland fell three spots to #10 in its fourth weekend, earning $4.3 million to raise its total gross to $67.3 million. The film had a budget of $23.6 million, making it a major success.
